I know some of you have FTP servers, I'm wondering what software you use to do this? I'm looking for cheap to free and works with jaws and either some one who can help me with it or it's simple, I'm new with that. Anyone have suggestions? I'd appreciate it.

For our site we use G6 FTP Server version 3. Look at www.g6ftpserver.com

There's a really good one that you can get off of sourceforge called File zilla. Personally I use a really old version of Serv-U I think 2.5, but don't quote me on that. The cool thing about it, is unlike the newer versions, you have no tree view. It's just ctrl+U for userws, ctrl+s for server setup, ctrl+g from groups, ctrl+i for IP access, etc.

I just got File Zilla today and am trying to set up an ftp server, but I'm having trouble. I can't get File Zilla to connect to the server. Can anyone help?

Doubtless there are countless free ftp servers since there are ftp clients for free and it seems to be a generally open sourcey kind of thing ya know? FOr a client I use ncftp, it is awesome because a) it's free and b) text based.

Just so you know, BPFTP Server is the home business of G6 FTP Server. BPFTP Server is still at version 2 I believe, but I use the business version, which is called G6 FTP Server version 3. I don't even know if they still develop version 2 of BPFTP Server.

Where can I get ncftp? I currently use FTP Guild, and it's a free version if I'm not mistaken. I like it, but it does require a lot of Jaws clicks.

I'm trying to use bpftp and everytime I log onto my server, it says that I can't log on because of an invalid home directory. Someone told me to specify one, but I don't know where. Please help!

i've now switched to serv-u since bpftp decided to stop working for some weird reason, i like serv-u cause of the whole remote admin thing.

G6 FTP Server also provides remote admin features, both through their administration client and over the web, just so you know. And, for the person having trouble specifying a home directory, which version of the server are you using? If you're using version 2, go into user setup, find the user you want to set a home dir for, and tab over to the access rights list. Then, if you've already setup access rights and the directory you want as a home directory is in the list, arrow to it, press shift+f10 or your apps key, and select set as home dir from the menu. If you're using version 3, launch the administrator application, login to admin, go to domains->yoursite->users->username and enter on the user to open the properties for that user. Then go to access rights and configure things from there.

this is another question related to ftp servers. I use file zilla myself. When you are setting your server up, to connect use your local loopback address (127.0.0.1) . Then just set your next things up. If you want to, you can drop me aline and i can solve some of the problems you might have since the help is a bit obscure and somewhat confusing. Anyway, the qestion is: I have set up a host name that redirects to my external IP address. Connections work fine if I am inside the local network; however, when I go to a different computer, it looks like internet explorer logs onto the ftp, then sets the user name as anonymous, and tries to make up a password. Is there a way to have this stop; and make it prompt you for a username or a password? I am not sure exactly what settings to change in IE, since I haven't set this one up in a long time. If you are using an ftp client the redirect works too but then you can log in since you can give it a user name and a password. On some macines i have, the internet explorer works fine. Again, I am not sure what optoins to change, so someone's help would be apreciated. My ftp server supports both passive and active modes. Thanks in advance.

This question exempts those not using win xp pro/2k/server.

Why would one bother getting a 3rd party ftp server, free or not, when its built in to your OS? Perhaps one answer can be that you may not have the original OS disk... Otherwise, one can simply designate one computer to be the ftp server and install the necessary services.; there is also an http server as well built in to the OS. *shrug*

can we all be on your servers?

Post 18 by ¤§¤spike¤§¤ (This site is so "educational") on Monday, 17-Dec-2007 15:41:35

The reason I ran a third party ftp server is cause Windows is pretty stable, well, xp is, at least, Serv-u has security certiffs, something that IIS Ms's take on ftp doesn't have.
